Installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server

Installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES 11 sp3)

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is a Linux operating system which focuses its attention on mainly servers, mid-range and mainframe. SLES as it is commonly known is mainly used by larger organisations/Enterprises. SLES is generally more stable than the open community edition with only maturely tested products making their way into this edition. SLES 11 is available to download as an evaluation. It can be downloaded for many platforms including x86, AMD64/Intel64, System Z, IBM Power and Itanium editions. SLES normally comes with 60 days support, providing patches and fixes. Larger platforms often offer longer evaluation periods. After the initial period, you will need to purchase a license agreement for continued support of your operating system.

To download your evaluation iso image of SLES 11 you will need to register for an account at the following site:

Free Evaluation SUSE Linux

In the following example I will be using a 32bit x86 platform image of the operating system (SLES-11-SP3-DVD-i586-GM-DVD1.iso). Note only DVD1 is needed. Once you have downloaded your SLES iso image for the relevant architecture, this image will need to be burned to a DVD. Software that can do this task can be found by searching for "dvd iso burning software" in the search box located above. Your system may already have the necessary CD/DVD burning software installed such as "Brasero, K3B, Nero, CDBurnerXP or Roxio". Once you have successfully burned your "iso" image of SLES 11 to your DVD, you will need to place the DVD into the DVD drive bay of your target system and reboot your system. (This example assumes you are using a x86 32bit version of the software). As your computer reboots, you will need to press the appropriate key to access your system's BIOS configuration settings. On many systems this key will be "F8", "F11" or "F12". Most systems will display the a message indicating which key needs to be pressed. Once you have access to your BIOS settings, you will need to modify the boot order of your system to boot from CD/DVD first. Once this change has been made, you can reboot your system and follow the instructions below.
