How can I obtain VIOS software or fixes?
Answer
This document describes how to obtain Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) software including:

- VIOS Expansion Pack--delivers additional VIOS security functionality including:
- Kerberos - is a system that provides a central authentication mechanism for a variety of client/server applications using passwords and secret keys.
- Secure SNMP - provides secure access by a combination of authenticating and encrypting packets over the network.
- Secure LDAP - is a directory service that can be used for centralized user management.
- Tivoli TSM including the required GSKit8 libraries.
VIOS Software Updates
VIOS software updates (Fix Packs, Service Packs, Mini Packs, and 2.1 migration images) are available for download at Fix Central:
> Product selector: PowerVM Virtual I/O Server
> Installed Version: Select your current ioslevel to populate a list of the levels you can update to.
> Check mark the desire Fix/Service/Mini Pack.
> Continue
> You will be prompted to log in with your IBM ID. Note: An IBM ID is required for VIOS entitlement verification.
> Select download option
> Continue
For questions/problems with Fix Central, please, contact Fix Central Help using one of the following options.
From Fix Central website:
On the top left corner: Click Help > Click "Chat for answers to common support questions" to get a live chat.

On the right side: Click "Contact and feedback" > Click "Submit feedback to Fix Central" and choose the appropriate topic.
VIOS Installation Software and the Expansion Pack
VIOS installation software and the Expansion Pack can be obtained from the Entitled Software Support (ESS) website. It requires entitlement verification.
1. Sign in to ESS website with your IBM or intranet ID credentials.
If you do not have an IBM ID (typically your email address), scroll down and click on "register here" right above the Sign in button to create one. If you registered and logged in for the first time and have problems or questions, send an email with the details to level1@us.ibm.com, include the machine type and serial# under the software maintenance contract for the server you are trying to order VIOS software for.
For assistance with problems specific to the ESS website, click Contacts for a list of customer support center contacts by country.
2. Once logged in, click on My entitled software on the top, left to expand.
3. Click Software updates.
4. On the top, right, under Brand selection, choose Power (AIX) from the pull down menu.
5. The next screen lists one or more customer numbers and machine serial numbers registered.
> Select the appropriate Customer Number from the pull down menu.
Note: Only the primary contact of the registered "Customer number" (and additional user IDs authorized by the primary contact) can see the "Order updates" option when logged in. To obtain information about the primary contact, call 800-466-8989, option 3 (Web application support).
6. In the Quick search box, enter the Machine type
> Select the appropriate Machine type/Serial number from the populated list
> Click on the grey arrow to proceed
7. Select your PowerVM Edition under the Entitled Software Updates and click Continue. Example:

To Order Physical Media
Under Delivery options:
> select "I want to receive the order as physical shipment"
> Choose "Ship product code only (DVD)" from the pull down menu
> Verify billing and shipping address
> Click Submit.
To Download ISO Images

On the top left navigation:
> click Software downloads. The next screen will show AIX Operating System by default.
> Leave as-is
> Click Continue for step 2.
In Step 2: Select the software you wish to download
Note: VIOS software is available under the PowerVM Editions. Scroll down to list PowerVM options.
> Select the appropriate PowerVM Edition
VIOS base installation ISO images are available for DVD and USB flash drive.
- Note 1: VIOS 2.2.6.50 (DVD - available Dec 2019), 2.2.6.51 (USB Flash - available Dec 2019), and the 2.2 Expansion Pack are available under the following product numbers:
- 5765-PVS PowerVM Standard Edition
- 5765-PVE PowerVM Enterprise Edition
- 5765-VS3 IBM PowerVM Standard Edition
- 5765-VE3 PowerVM Enterprise Edition
- Note 2: VIOS 3.1.1 and the 3.1.1 Expansion Pack is available under product numbers 5765-VS3 IBM PowerVM Standard Edition and 5765-VE3 PowerVM Enterprise ED V3. There are 2 versions available for this release:
- 3.1.1.0 (DVD - available Nov 2019) and
- 3.1.1.10 (Flash - available Nov 2019)
- Note 3: Availability of installation images for older VIOS releases
- 2.2.5.0, 2.2.5.20, and 2.2.6.0 (DVD) are available under product number 5799-PTV PowerVM V2 Technology Level.
- 3.1.0.0 (DVD available Nov 2018) and 3.1.0.21 (USB Flash available May 2019) can be found under product number 5799-P31 PowerVM V3 Technology Level.
> Click Continue
In Step 3: Product download package selection
> Select the PowerVM Edition to download all products included with that edition or click details > packages to hand pick the desired VIOS images to download
> Click Continue.
> Click I agree to accept Terms and conditions.
> Click Download now to start download. You get a list of files similar to the following depending on the product number selected:
- For DVD installation, the VIOS optical images are in ISO format. It includes 2 file extensions (*.iso and *.iso.ZIP). 2 DVDs are needed. Because each .iso file is a bit-for-bit copy of one optical media-ROM, you must create a separate optical media for each file for the software to install properly. If you try to put more than one image on an optical media, the installation fails. The second file (*.iso.ZIP) will need to be unzipped prior to burning the images to media.
Note: Images should not be dragged and dropped to CD burner. Please see the Burn optical images section for further information. - For USB flash drive, a single file is available. For details on how to copy image to the flash drive, see PowerVM VIOS 3.1.0.10 USB Installation.
