Install the driver

  1. After you have connected the printer to the PC, and conducted the feed test, turn the printer on. Windows 7 will automatically put the printer in an unspecified section in "Devices and Printers" on your computer.
  2. Windows will automatically detect the driver, and begin installing. 

What do I do if Windows did not automatically install the driver?
  1. Click here to download the zip file that contains the drivers to your PC.
  2. Select the printer specifications, and click on the recommended driver link for your computer.
  3. Extract the zipped file "starprnt_v1.5_setup_" somewhere on to your PC that you will be able to reference back to in the next step, such as your desktop.
  4. Go to Devices and Printers, and click Add a Printer. The Devices and Printers" section of your computer can be found on the start menu or under Control Panel > Hardware and Sounds > Devices and Printers > Add a Printer. 
  5. Select Local printer, and click Next.
  6. Select to use the Default Printer port, and click Next.
  7. Select the USB port your printer is plugged into on your computer, and click Next.     
  8. You will notice the printers listed does not include the TSP650. Select to highlight Star TSP600 Cutter (TSP643), and click Next
  9. Choose the recommended setting "Use the driver that is currently installed," and click Next.
  10. Change the printer name to "Star TSP650 Printer," and click Next
  11. Sharing a printer is optional. Click Next to skip and continue installing.
  12. Click Finish.

Part 5: Change the printer settings

To start, make sure your printer's settings are correct, and set it as the default printer.  You can do this by returning to "Devices and Printers" on your computer:
1. Right-click on the "Star TSP650 Printer" icon and select "Set as default printer."                 
2. You'll see a green checkmark next to the printer icon to show the printer default is set.

Next, to change the printer settings, follow the instructions below:
  1. Right-click on the Star TSP650 Printer and choose Printer properties.  
  2. On the Ports tab, make sure that "Enable bidirectional support" is checked.  
  3. On the Advanced tab, select "Print directly to the printer."  
  4. On the Device Settings tab, make sure:  
    • "72mm x Receipt" is selected for paper type.
    • In the Installable Options section, Page Cut Type should be set to "Partial Cut/Partial Cut."
    • If you have a cash drawer, the Peripheral Unit Type should be set to "Cash Drawer."
    • Also for a cash drawer, the Peripheral Unit 1 should be set to "Document Top."           
  5. On the General tab, click the Preferences button at the bottom.  
  6. In Printing Preferences, click on the Paper/Quality tab and choose "Friction" as the paper source. For Media, choose "normal type paper."   
  7. Click on the Advanced button. Change the Paper Size to "72mm x Receipt."  
  8. Click OK. Click OK again. Click OK a third time.
